Furious, Leontes imprisons the pregnant Hermione. When a daughter is born, Leontes orders the child abandoned in the wilderness. At Hermione's trial, the Oracle of Apollo declares her innocent, and that Leontes shall die without an heir if the daughter is not found. Their son Mamillius dies, Hermione succumbs to grief and Leontes is overcome with remorse. At the same time his abandoned daughter is found by a shepherd who names her Perdita. Sixteen years pass and the play moves to Bohemia where Florizel, Polixenes' son, has fallen in love with Perdita. They decide to marry, but when  Polixenes refuses to allow it, the young couple flees to Sicilia. Once there, Perdita's true identity is established and the two families are reunited and reconciled.
