The year in local arts brought premieres, new initiatives and several major leadership changes for Madison area organizations.

Aug. 21: “APT’s remarkable ‘Romeo and Juliet’ demands attention”

Before this review, I spent an afternoon on the Hill at American Players Theatre to get perspective on this “Romeo,” starring Joshua Castille and Isabelle Bushue as Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers. Castille, a Deaf actor, signed his performance, with other Deaf and signing actors in the cast as well as a “heart chorus” of actors who spoke his lines.

This was simply a remarkable production, directed by John Langs with heart and deep honesty. I was so thrilled to be in the audience for this.
