With the conclusion of a long spring cold-snap, the APT season officially began this past Saturday with opening performances of Molly Sweeney and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. However, opening day would not be the same without one special annual event: the Spring Green Night Picnic. Members of the Spring Green community gathered for a potluck dinner of pasta salads and pies, along with a larger assortment of home-cooked dishes to accompany hamburgers and brats courtesy of the Spring Green Chamber of Commerce, and grilled by fabulous APT volunteers. The weather was just right, and with the proper amount of bug spray, the evening was great fun. Some attendees were content with a hefty plate of food at a picnic table under the pavilion. Others grabbed a table away from the shelter and created their own unique setting, with tablecloths, flowers and wine goblets as audiences clinked their glasses together to celebrate the beginning of summer. As they enjoyed their delicious barbecue, cards were played, families and friends were reunited, and new memories were made. Most of the discussion among attendees revolved around excitement for the upcoming season at APT. From what many call Shakespeare's best play, Hamlet, to James DeVita's one-man show, Dickens in America, featuring James Ridge, whether Up-the-Hill or Touchstone, audiences were anxious to be wowed by the magic of all shows performed in the woods of APT. Shortly after seven, those who brought food for the potluck grabbed their containers, coolers were stored in the car, and everyone began their journey up-the-hill for the evening's performance. When the friendly jingle played, alerting audiences that show time was approaching, the volume of excitement increased (even if people were short of breath from their climb). The 2013 Spring Green Night Picnic was an excellent kick-off to an excellent 34th season at American Players Theatre. Members of the Spring Green community and APT audiences were more enthusiastic than ever.
