Each repertory play staged up the hill at American Players Theatre takes months to create. By January, casting is complete for the summer. Right now, the artistic team in Spring Green is already talking about 2025 and early 2026.

For Winter Words, the off-season reading series in the Touchstone, that prep time shrinks to less than a day.

“They have four hours of rehearsal,” said Carey Cannon, APT’s associate artistic director. “It is fast and furious, which is so unlike the way we grow plays here.”

APT announced its Winter Words lineup on Jan. 3. Four plays will be given readings on Monday nights: Jan. 29, Feb. 12, Feb. 26 and March 25, all at 7 p.m. The Touchstone seats about 200, and fewer than two dozen tickets remained by the following afternoon.

“I would encourage folks, even if it’s sold out, to keep calling the box office as it gets closer,” she said. “We’re very grateful that our audience, when they know they can’t come — particularly for Winter Words — they turn their tickets back in. They know it’s a one-night-only thing.”
