While Madison’s late summer weather lingers and the touring Broadway season won’t kick off until November, the time is now to grab tickets to fall performing arts.

American Players Theatre: ‘Nat Turner in Jerusalem’

Thursday, Oct. 17-Sunday, Nov. 10

Multi-hyphenate artists Gavin Lawrence and Jim DeVita — each an actor, director and playwright, among other things — pair up in Nathan Alan Davis’s poetic 2016 play. Running in the indoor, 200-seat Touchstone Theatre, “Nat Turner” imagines the night before the title character is set to be hanged for his leadership of an 1831 uprising of enslaved people, one some credit with accelerating the start of the Civil War. Lawrence plays Turner and DeVita plays Thomas Gray, the attorney who took his “confession.” Tyrone Phillips directs. Tickets cost $73-$110.
