The Quick Chat series is where we dive into the life and times of APT’s finest. Each interview will supply insights ranging from the obviously relevant to the vaguely strange. This week features APT's fabulous Gift Shop Manager & Buyer, Lisa Scofield.
APT: Where are you from, where do you live now and what path led you to APT?
Lisa Scofield: I grew up in Green Bay, graduated from UW-Madison and have lived in Spring Green for over 20 years. My daughter was a fairy in the 2008 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and I figured since she was going to be at the theater so often, I might as well work there that season, so I started working in the gift shops. I also teach at the high school in Spring Green, so when I started here, it was just a fun, summer thing. From there it has grown into a year-round position.
APT: Tell us a little about what you do here at APT.
LS: I manage the shops, design the logo gear and buy the merchandise. I still teach, but no longer full-time.
APT: How do you choose the gift shop items?
LS: If something makes me laugh, I am probably going to buy it. That’s why we sell things like opossum puppets, coffee cups that say, “Hold me closer, tiny donuts,” and New Yorker greeting cards. Aside from that, I think about the patrons and what they might like. I am after things that are functional and fun, good gift items. I also like to support small businesses. Most of our logo gear is printed in Spring Green at Bailey’s Printing.
APT: What is something that you are looking forward to having in the gift shop this season?
LS: My favorite new find is the Sapling Press card line.
APT: Do you have any fun gift shop stories or experiences you’d care to share?
LS: Last night, I had a couple tell me they came to APT on their first date 30 years ago. They now live in New York, but they haven’t missed a season since that first date. My favorite memories from the shops involve patrons’ stories.
APT: Why do you love coming to APT (for work/shows/etc.)?
LS: I love the magical atmosphere, and am continually awed by the natural beauty of this area. I never tire of driving over the Wisconsin River on Highway 23 or looking out the Touchstone windows to watch a deer moving through the woods. Beyond the place itself, I enjoy visiting with patrons, working with amazing co-workers, and, of course, seeing quality theater.
APT: Anything else you would like to add?
LS: Buy a T-shirt! Please.
