Indoors at APT, Genet's 'The Maids' glitters like shattered glass

To call “The Maids” a cat and mouse game would be too tame for the vicious, troubling clash of wills onstage in the Touchstone Theatre this summer.

These women are playing at something far more twisted — and deadly.

In director Gigi Buffington’s razor-sharp production of Jean Genet’s 1947 surreal drama, lines blur between who is who and what is real. “The Maids” runs at American Players Theatre through Oct. 5, and it aims in 90 heated minutes to set an audience on edge and keep them there.

Melisa Pereyra and Andrea San Miguel play the title characters, sisters who find escape from their young mistress’s “belching sink” and dirty tiles in elaborate games of pretend.
