APT connected with Patti Peltier of Savor the River Valley to learn more about the coalition's origin story, the role community plays in their mission and what you should try out next time your in town. Dig in!

A Little Background

Savor the River Valley started in the summer of 2021 when a bunch of interested people started talking about how we could create more visibility for the emerging food scene in this area. Many visitors pass through the River Valley without discovering the amazing people producing, selling and serving delicious food here. How can we help visitors—and local folks—connect with us? We kept expanding our circle and finding more people who wanted to join our effort, so Savor the River Valley was born.

In 2022 we launched our website and offered our first cooking classes. In 2023 we had an inaugural Earth Day Farm & Food Tour which attracted hundreds of people. It was so successful, we’re doing it again in April 20, 2024. This year we also distributed a Local Food Guide, a card designed to help visitors find local food options. In November, we’re launching Savor Winter School, a delicious way to make winter more fun. We’re learning as we go and finding the most effective ways to connect with people.

Our now 40+ members are passionate about what they do. Many of them have done other things in their lives and have followed their dreams to their businesses. It’s interesting to hear their stories and learn about what makes their farm, their business, their products unique. If they have a minute, they’ll be happy to tell you! When you think about what made a trip memorable, it’s often a connection you made, an experience you had. We hope guests use our website to find their way to these memorable experiences. The River Valley is full of them!

More on the Experience

Visitors enjoy connecting with our Savor members. Our members are passionate about growing, preparing and serving food. They’ve invested tremendous time and energy learning a lot about what they’re doing. They are happy to share what they know with people who share their interest—or are just plain curious.

Visitors also appreciate the opportunity to purchase locally grown and processed, wholesome food. Many also embrace the opportunity to support small, local businesses.

What's up this Fall

We have a lot of reasons for APT audience members to return to the River Valley this fall and winter!

This fall, Chef Jay Miller of RedBarn Catering offers a two-part, Japanese-themed series featuring ramen noodles and sushi rolls with plenty of handy tips and lots of tasting.

In November, we launch our Savor Winter School to give people new ways to make the season delicious and exciting. You can get ready for the holidays by learning to make mixers for non-alcoholic mocktails or take a fun time-out learning to make authentic tamales.

Later, find out how to grow micro-greens, study “cake science” and take home a cake, dive into sourdough baking, learn cake decorating, make hand-rolled pasta, enjoy a "tasting menu" and sharpen your knife skills. And then before you know it, it will be spring again. More information about Savor Winter will be on our website soon.
