APT had the opportunity to visit Taliesin Preservation, our neighbors to the West, last week. While there, we received a tour of the ongoing Hillside Theatre restoration project and connected with Susan Kennedy, Communications Manager at Taliesin Preservation. Read on to learn more about the Taliesin experience and how it elevates any arts trip to the River Valley.

A Little Background

Taliesin is the home, studio, school, and 800-acre property of iconic American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Located in rural Spring Green, Wright built Taliesin on his favorite boyhood hill in the Wyoming Valley, homesteaded by his Welsh grandparents.

With buildings spanning his career from 1896 to 1959, including two homes, a school, barn, windmill, and restaurant, Taliesin provides a uniquely comprehensive look at a busy architect's body of work. Taliesin served as a laboratory of organic architecture and design. From the courtyards and gardens to his living room, loggia, and birdwalk, Taliesin offers commanding views of the river valley.

If you've been to a Wright building before, you will recognize something about that building here at Taliesin.

The Experience

Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture is known across the globe, and Taliesin was his beloved Wisconsin home. We are one of eight buildings that comprise the UNESCO World Heritage Site listing for The 20th Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright (2019) and the only public UNESCO site in Wisconsin. Taliesin has been a National Historic Landmark since 1976.

With a wide variety of tours and special events spanning spring, summer and fall seasons, there are plenty of ways to experience Taliesin. Take an introductory 1-Hour House Tour, 2-Hour Highlights Tour, or opt for the more extensive Estate Tour. Outdoor hikes, interactive workshops (as featured in a recent New York Times article) and educational opportunities make Taliesin a living place buzzing with creative energy.

People love their Taliesin experience for the stunning architecture, natural beauty and knowledgeable and friendly tour guides and staff. We have a wonderful curated Gift Shop of merchandise from local artisans and Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired gifts. Come in during our open hours and browse around!
