What makes a “gentleman?” Two Shakespeare plays will take up the question next summer at American Players Theatre during a 2026 season that includes both “As You Like It” and “The ‘Gentlemen’ of Verona.”

“Shakespeare asks questions about identity all the time,” said Brenda DeVita, the company’s artistic director. “All his cross-dressing, and pants roles (when women play men). He’s always playing with, ‘What is feminine? What is masculine?’”

American Players Theatre, or APT, a repertory theater company in Spring Green, has been producing classical plays outdoors since 1980. Each summer it runs eight plays — five in the renovated amphitheater, three in a 200-seat indoor theater — plus a shoulder season play.

“The 39 Steps,” a British spy comedy, opens this weekend and has nearly sold out. In 2025, APT sold 98,500 tickets (including comps) versus 89,963, a year-over-year increase of 9.5%.
