Wisconsin theater: Best supporting performances of 2017

Ordered by preference, here are the 10 performances by actors in a supporting role that most registered with me this year:

1. Colleen Madden (Beatrice, “A View From the Bridge” American Players Theatre): Madden’s heartbreaking Bea gave her all in fighting what part of her knew she couldn’t stop.  One of Madden’s all-time best, among many memorable performances.

2. Deborah Staples (multiple roles, “Great Expectations,” Milwaukee Chamber Theatre): From her unforgettable Miss Havisham to the smallest of roles as a coach passenger, Staples proved anew that she’s Wisconsin theater’s great chameleon.  

3. Diane Lane (Grace, “Annie,” Skylight Music Theatre): Lane embodied her character’s name and sang like an angel as Warbucks’ capable assistant.
