Posted August 20, 2014

So you're planning a trip to Spring Green, Wisconsin. Maybe you've been here before, or maybe you haven't. Either way, you might wonder, 'What is there in Spring Green?' After all, the village boasts a booming population of about 1600 people over an expansive 1.8 square miles. How much could there possibly be? As it turns out, quite a bit. This pint-sized place packs an overgrown punch of shops, restaurants, and attractions of all kinds. So much so, in fact, that Spring Green really does have something for everyone. We've gathered a few ideas below, but this list is by no means exhaustive. If you want to see even more, take a look at our Guide to Spring Green. Check out these suggestions for whatever kind of person you (or your travel mates) are. For the foodie If your interests are primarily gastronomical in nature, there are plenty of good eats to soothe the pickiest palette right in town. For a cute cafe meal, look no further than the Spring Green General Store-part shop, part restaurant, and a ton of fun. The menu is 'comfort food with a creative twist,' featuring soups, salads, and sandwiches. Driftless Depot Market & Deli stocks locally grown, mindfully sourced foods and serves sandwiches, soups, antipasti, and picnic baskets. Friday nights feature fresh Wisconsin trout dinners. Tea drinkers should head to Bird of Paradise Tea Cafe & Bakery, which sells more than 70 whole leaf teas, teapots, and accessories. For a laid back bar-grill meal, head to The Shed, a favorite hangout of APT actors. The relatively new bar/restaurant Freddy Valentines' Public House is situated inside the beautiful historic State Bank of Spring Green building and boasts an array of pub-style eats. For the shopaholic If you're the type who just can't get enough of shopping, some of the Spring Green stores should suit your liking. Book lovers and food lovers alike should visit Arcadia Bookstore, which features a wide variety of literature and an ever-evolving menu of entrees and snacks. Panacea sells an eclectic mix of home decor, jewelry, and health products with an earthy, natural vibe. Or head to Convivio, which showcases international goods and unique gifts. Quilters should check out The Country Sampler, one of the top quilt shops in the country. For the 'outdoorsy' type It's no secret that this is one of the most scenic and beautiful areas of the state-so why not spend some time enjoying the great outdoors? In increasing order of the amount of adventurous spirit needed, here are a few options. For just a touch of fresh air, golfers can make use of a number of courses, including the one at the House on the Rock Resort, located just across the street from APT. If cycling is more your style, make use of the extensive bike routes that cover Spring Green and connect us to neighboring towns. Just mind the rolling hills. Across the highway from the APT grounds is the Tower Hill State Park, which offers hiking trails, campsites, picnic areas, and a canoe landing. Speaking of canoes, the true thrill seekers can spend some time on the Wisconsin River, which cuts through town. For the arts lover Spring Green is known for its bustling arts scene, and for good reason. We'll start with the obvious: see a world-class play under the stars at American Players Theatre. For a different kind of theatrical experience, see physical theatre and mime work through The White Church Theatre Project. Music lovers can check out small-name bands at weekly music sessions at The Sh*tty Barn. Or if fine art is your favorite, visit one of our local galleries like No Rules Gallery or Wilson Creek Pottery. For those who want to see the 'Big 3' APT is proud to be part of a triple crown (of sorts) that helps to put Spring Green on the map. See all three attractions, and you're well on your way to being a bona fide Spring Green expert. Frank Lloyd Wright's Spring Green residence, Taliesin, offers many different daily tours of the stunning property. As an added bonus, visitors can eat delicious meal at the Riverview Terrace Cafe in the Visitor Center. For a touch of the bizarre (or more than a touch), go to The House on the Rock and see everything from the breathtaking view from the Infinity Room to collections of every kind in The Circus Room, The Doll House Room, and more. No matter where your interests lie, Spring Green has something for you. So grab your suitcase (or your kayak, purse, or picnic basket) and hit the road. We can't wait to see you!
