The ominous, howling opening of “Wolf at the Door” sounds at first like a threat. In Marisela Treviño Orta’s spellbinding drama, those howls are also a promise.

American Players Theatre’s Spring Green audience first met Orta’s work in 2022 with an enchanting production of “The River Bride,” a lyrical fable about two sisters and one enigmatic suitor set along the Amazon River.

Inspired by Aztec folklore, “Wolf at the Door” (playing indoors in the Touchstone Theatre) is more earthy, set at a Mexican hacienda “far from anything.” Yet it’s no more earthbound. There are spirits here too, powerful, unknowable forces at the gate, soon to upend the lives of the humans inside.
