As the month of August begins and massive quantities of school supplies return to stores, it is now more important than ever to soak up every last moment of summer. If your summer adventures bring you to our corner of the state, consider checking out a few of the following events and experiences before sweater weather arrives.

September 8: North by Northwest

Hike the Spring Green Preserve

We do a lot of talking about the woods here, but did you know Spring Green is also home to Wisconsin’s only desert? The Spring Green Preserve, located just 6 miles north of APT, has some of the most unique nature offerings in the state due its dry, sandy prairie bluffs. Prickly pear cacti and the occasional lizard call this slice of the Driftless home, making hikers feel like they’ve traveled to the Southwest. Trails lead you around this fascinating ecosystem and offer breathtaking views of the valley below.

Get Your Live Music Fix

The River Valley area offers many opportunities to tap your toes or dance along to live music in the summer months. Rural Musicians Forum, a local non-profit created to foster an interest in musical traditions in the valley and beyond, hosts musical artists from across the state at several rotating venues.
Downtown, The Shed Bar & Grill’s weekly  “Local Nights”  on Thursdays feature local musicians and plenty of great food and drink to start your weekend off right.
Just down the road, The Slowpoke Lounge & Cabaret has live music of all sorts on the weekends. Whether you’re looking for folk, jazz or rock and roll, Slowpoke may have just the intimate concert experience for you.
And don’t forget about our friends at The Sh*tty Barn! If live concerts are your love language, stop by this one-of-a-kind venue for a fabulous show featuring indie musicians you’ll obsess over before your friends catch on.
One more to remember: our Midsummer Music series here on APT’s campus, performing most Wednesdays and Thursdays through August!

4Petesake Day in the Park

August 17, 2025 | 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Veteran’s Park, Spring Green
Have fun and help others at the same time! 4Petesake is a River Valley organization dedicated to providing financial support to area residents going through a difficult time. Come help celebrate 20 years of doing good in the community at their annual Day in the Park event, featuring live music, silent auctions and raffles, tournaments and races and plenty of family fun activities.

Experience the Wisconsin River (Safely!)

We consider the Wisconsin River to be one of the most beautiful parts of the River Valley region. Make time this summer to splash around or get a little more adventurous and spend the day kayaking or canoeing along the sandbars. But be careful and make sure you have a life jacket and plenty of sun screen!
