He hatches a plot to woo the wives of two prosperous citizens - Mistress Page and Mistress Ford - to gain access to their husband's purses. Confident of his ability to seduce them, Falstaff sends the two women identical love letters, but his intentions are transparent and the women concoct a plot of their own to avenge his gross presumption.
