Joe Cerqua (Original Composition and Sound Design) is a freelance composer, producer, vocalist and sound designer. He is thrilled to be returning to APT for his seventh season. Previous APT credits include original music and sound design for The Taming of the Shrew, The Philanderer, Ah, Wilderness, Arms and the Man, Plays the Thing and London Assurance. He has composed music and/or designed sound for over 200 productions in Chicago, nationally, and internationally. Recent projects include original music and sound design for Sense and Sensibility at Northlight Theatre and Actors Theater of Louisville, 10 Chimneys at Northlight, The Farnsworth Invention at Forward Theatre, Musical Direction for The Adding Machine at Skyline Opera, Pinocchio at Deaf West in LA, Emma at The Cleveland Playhouse, The Elephant Man at the Actor’s Coop in Los Angeles, Charlie’s Aunt at The Clarence Brown Theatre, Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them at Forward Theatre Company, Love's Labour's Lost at Milwaukee Shakespeare, Bus Stop, Doubt and The Drawer Boy at Kansas City Rep, The Final Adventure of Sherlock Holmes at Indiana Rep, Death of a Salesman, The Diary of Anne Frank, Permanent Collection and The Nerd at Madison Rep, Educating Rita at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, The Defiant Muse and The Snow Queen at Victory Gardens. Steppenwolf credits include original music and sound for Homebody/Kabul, The Fall to Earth, Wedding Band, Royal Family, Uncle Vanya, David Copperfield and Sideman. Other credits include original music and sound design for Under Midwestern Stars at Missouri Rep, Twelfth Night at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Transformations, Millennium Mambo and A Christmas Carol at the Goodman Theatre, Homebody/Kabul at BAM and the Mark Taper Forum, The Family Gold, Bourbon at the Border and Free Man of Color at Victory Gardens. Talley’s Folly, Home, Anna Christie, Bad Dates, Having Our Say, Our Town, Rembrandt’s Gift, Moon For The Misbegotten, Copenhagen and The Drawer Boy at Madison Rep. His scores and designs for Sideman, How I Learned to Drive, The Laramie Project, Broken Glass and Master Class have all enjoyed national tours. Joe is the Producing Director/Composer in residence for the Cerqua Rivera Art Experience, a critically acclaimed 13-piece jazz orchestra and 10-member dance company. Orbert Davis, Johnny Frigo, Liz Carrol, Regina Taylor, and Marcos Loya are among some of the nationally recognized recording artists who have recorded Mr. Cerqua’s music. Joe is the Supervising Producer of the Music Department at Columbia College and has contributed original music to many of the Theatre Department’s mainstage and studio shows. Future projects include concerts with Cerqua Rivera, Original Music for Paradise Drag at Actors Coop, and two productions with Forward Theatre in Madison.
